When Aclimatise asked me if I’d be interested in reviewing some of their new products I was delighted. This is a small, UK-based business, who “provide technical and performance fabrics, and develop fabrics on a par with any of its competitors”.
They sent me a pair of Merlin Overtrousers to review. The trousers were clearly very well made, and the fabric feels incredibly sturdy and I’m sure will last many, many years of hard use. Aclimatise say of the Merlin Overtrousers, “Lightweight waterproof, windproof and breathable Overtrousers. Manufactured from our high performance Eco Air 3 layer offering high tear strength with low weight, trousers are designed for maximum movement, breathability and waterproofness without added bulk. 3/4 length water resistant zips with storm flap protection allow for easy fitting without the need to remove your boots, whilst the elasticated waist and drawcord adjustments allow a fine tuned fit. Ideal as a layering piece for when the weather turns cold or wet. Suitable for walking, Golf, Cycling or general sports”.
The truly great thing about the Merlin Overtrousers though is the build quality. They really are very robust indeed, and their waterproofness was very evident in use out in a typical Cumbrian summer. I do think that perhaps a bit more thought could go into the design in order to appeal to the modern, fashion-conscious hillwalker – the sample Aclimatise sent me came in olive, and they do look quite old-fashioned for the modern marketplace. I know they will appeal to the older walker who wants a pair of overtrousers to keep going for many years to come, which I think is admirable in today’s throw-away society, but as a sound design that will appeal to the masses I think Aclimatise perhaps need to think again.
Another great thing about the Merlin Overtrousers is that Aclimatise are currently selling them at a reduced ‘launch price’ of £90, so if you want a hard-wearing pair of trousers that are incredibly waterproof, order you pair today!
