Last week Ben Wells and Sian Breakell asked me if I’d run a Mountain Leader training day for them. They are both close to being ready for their final ML Assessment, and wanted to have a day just practicing a few things. We headed up into the Aran range from Cwm Cywarch, and spent the morning looking at rope work – confidence roping, belaying clients up and down using direct and indirect belays, and abseiling using the ‘Old Classic’ and ‘New Classic’ abseil techniques. We also covered leadership styles, and did a fair bit on flora and fauna too.

Over lunch I tested their general mountain knowledge with one of my fiendish quizzes, and we then climbed over the summit of Glasgwm looking at advanced navigation techniques, as well as skills for teaching navigation.
